The Department of Education was established through the Education Decree of 1863 as the Superior Commission of Primary Instruction under a Chairman. The Education agency underwent many reorganization efforts in the 20th century to better define its purpose vis-a-vis the changing administrations and charters. The present-day Department of Education was eventually mandated through Republic Act 9155, otherwise known as the Governance of Basic Education act of 2001 which establishes the mandate of this agency.

The Department of Education (DepEd) formulates, implements, and coordinates policies, plans, programs, and projects in the areas of formal and non-formal basic education. It supervises all elementary and secondary education institutions, including alternative learning systems, both public and private; and provides for the establishment and maintenance of a complete, adequate, and integrated system of basic education relevant to the goals of national development.

“I Can Read and Compute the Universe”

“I Can Read and Compute the Universe” is a program developed for the Grade Three pupils of Sampaloc Site II Elementary School with the main goal of developing reading habits and knowledge in Mathematics, especially in the four fundamentals of operation namely, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Word problems in Mathematics often pose a challenge because they require that students read and comprehend the text of the problem, identify the question that needs to be answered, and finally create and solve a numerical equation. For this reason it is recommended that students learn key terminology prior to attempting to solve mathematical word problems.

The Grade Three teachers are dedicated and motivated to implement this program as they know that this program gives a great  help for the Grade Three pupils in their learning process.

The reading program is held after the  PreTest of  Phil-Iri Test, wherein every class adviser crafted their class reading program to help the struggling readers in their class. Also, a remedial reading lesson is conducted 20-30 minutes before or after class hours. Conceptualize reading, learner’s, and Phil-Iri materials were used  in this program.A collaborative effort of pupil’s parents belong to this program and the class advisers ,with the help of school reading coordinator and Master Teachers. After the intervention and reading sessions made to the struggling readers,a Post Test was conducted to evaluate  their progress.

Another program of Grade Three level is the memorizing and reciting of the Multiplication Table of all Grade Three pupils. This was started in the Second quarter of their Math lesson. The Grade Three pupils, proceed to their teachers and family members to recite the Multiplication Table and if they are correct , a teacher’s or family member’s signature is affixed on their copy to be submitted to their class adviser.

As the program continues, the path will be clear to the ladder of pupil’s success and they can say ”I Can Read and Compute the Universe” with flying colors and be proud of their Alma Mater.
